YouWhy talk to strangers at all
It is ten at night and your friends are asleep, or busy, or in a different time zone. You do not want to scroll. You want a real voice, someone who answers back and has not heard your stories before. That is the moment most people open a stranger video chat.
There is a particular kind of freedom in it. Nobody here knows your job, your ex or your reputation, so you can be a bit more curious and a bit less careful about sounding clever. People use it to practise a language, to kill a long evening, to meet someone from a country they have never visited, or just to hear a laugh.
It also works because both people opted in. Nobody on the other side of the screen was dragged into a conversation. That shared starting point is why a quick hello can turn into twenty minutes.

A video call with a stranger, start to finish
Here is what actually happens, so the first one is not a surprise.
You tap start
Your browser asks to use the camera and microphone. You allow it once and see yourself in a small tile.
We find someone online
Matching looks for another person who is searching at the same time. It usually takes a few seconds. The pairing works the same way as on random video chat, and you can skip as many times as you like.
You talk, then decide
Say hi. If it clicks, stay. If not, press next, or leave.
How to talk to strangers online without it getting awkward
The awkward part is rarely the stranger. It is the first ten seconds.
Open with something you can answer back
"Hi" is a dead end. "Hi, you look like you are somewhere warm, where are you?" gives them something to grab. Questions that start with where, what and how get stories. Questions that start with do you get one-word answers.
If you are stuck, our list of conversation starters for talking to a stranger online covers twelve openers with real examples of how they tend to go.
Match their energy for the first minute
Some people want to joke, some want to practise English, some are just tired and want company. Listen for it in the first minute and pitch yourself a notch near theirs. Pushing a quiet person to perform is how calls end early.
Leave well
A simple "I have to go, it was nice meeting you" is enough. You owe nobody a reason. If a conversation turns uncomfortable, you do not need to say anything at all: skip or leave and, if it was out of line, report it.
Stranger video chat, with a way out built in
Talking to people you do not know is only enjoyable if leaving is easy. Every call here has a skip button and a report button on screen, and both are free to use. If someone asks for money, pushes you to move to another app, or tries to get you to do something you are not comfortable with, that is your cue to end the call.
We keep the rules short and written in plain language on the help and safety page, including what happens after you report someone. For people who want to keep their identity to themselves from the start, anonymous video chat covers exactly what is and is not shared.
Not in the mood for video? Talk to strangers by text
Plenty of good conversations start without a camera. If you are on a train, in a shared flat, or just not ready to be seen, you can use text chat with strangers and keep the same matching. Some people start there and switch to video once they have a feel for who they are talking to.
You can also get a feel for the whole product first. The free cam chat page explains the ten free matches you get every day, and what changes when you use coins.
Questions people ask before they start
Is it safe to video chat with strangers?
It can be, if you treat it like meeting anyone new: keep personal details to yourself, never send money, and leave the second something feels wrong. Skip, block and report are always available. See help and safety for the full checklist.
How do I talk to strangers online without being awkward?
Start with a question they can answer with a story, like where they are or what their evening looks like. Avoid one-word openers. We list twelve ideas in our guide to starting a conversation.
Do I have to show my face?
You can switch to text if you would rather not use the camera yet. Some people prefer to chat first and turn the camera on later.
What if the person I match with is rude?
Skip them. If they said something that crossed a line, report them from inside the call. You do not have to be polite to someone who is not polite to you.
Can I choose who I talk to?
Matching is random by design: you get whoever is online at the same time. If you do not like a match, skip to the next one.
